This brief examines the interventions by ECOWAS in the electoral processes of its member states, with a particular emphasis on its management of the 2016 post-election impasse in The Gambia. In terms of lessons learned, the text’s author concludes that mediation processes can indeed be effective when 1) mandates are grounded in relevant norms and legal instruments, and 2) international actors and regional organizations form successful cooperative partnerships.
