The seven essays in this volume examine the existing vision of military service in Israel and whether it is still relevant to the needs of the country and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). In particular, the articles look at 1) the concept of “human resources” in the IDF; 2) the economic dimensions of Israel’s conscription debate; 3) the current role of the military in Israeli society; 4) the evolving rationale for serving in the armed forces; 5) the appropriate model for female service in the IDF, and more.
