This paper explores the growing trend in the EU of enacting migration control on the high seas or international waters - so-called interdiction. It looks at the possibilities for asserting human rights extraterritorially on the high seas, in foreign territorial waters and in relation to situations defined as search and rescue missions. The author focuses in particular on the Mediterranean and the sea between the West African coast and the Canary Islands as the maritime areas where the EU is concentrating its efforts to curb migration toward Europe.
