This paper examines the political and economic inter-relation between the Nabucco and South Stream gas pipeline projects. First, it provides an overview of the gas supply to Europe and the role of Russia. The second part discusses the challenges and prospects of the South Stream project, which is planned to transport natural gas from Russia to Italy. The final part considers the Nabucco project, including political aspects.
