This paper contends that Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan and his Justice and Development Party (AKP) have adopted a comprehensive policy for controlling and regulating the religious realm in Turkey. More specifically, the text’s author outlines that this policy relies on three different but complementary components: 1) using state institutions and resources to define and control citizens’ religious discourse and life; 2) incorporating religious communities and organizations into party and state institutions, and 3) forming new religious organizations and communities through family-controlled religious foundations.
