This paper addresses Serbia's reaction to Kosovo's declaration of independence, examines the outlook for the Serbian parliamentary and local elections on 11 May 2008 and assesses the chances for a new stable government. It describes the violent course of events following Kosovo's independence, outlines the Serbian government's strategy to undermine Kosovo's international recognition, and examines the struggle between pro-EU and pro-Russian parties in the run-up to the elections. The paper suggests that both the EU and the US should stop intervening directly in support of one or another political force.
