This briefing examines the UK National Security Strategy (NSS), which was published in March 2008. After giving an overview of the context and aims of the NSS, the author assesses the strategy. The briefing argues that the NSS is a step in the direction of globally sustainable security as it considers issues such as climate change and inequality. According to the author, however, the implications of these considerations and the UK's possible negative influence on world security are not fully recognized and the strategy sticks to traditional approaches to national defense.
