This paper examines the price rises in global agricultural markets and their implications for poor countries. According to the author, higher prices can to some extent bring benefits to the rural poor, although not necessarily in the short term. She argues that trade liberalization has limited the ability of developing countries to take advantage of higher prices for farmers, and that UNCTAD could play an important role in managing agricultural markets.
