This paper examines the developments in Iraq and Afghanistan from February to April 2008. The author explores whether the security situation has improved and finds that there is little prospect of sustained progress in both countries. He argues that from a narrow domestic political perspective within the US, this might not prove a major issue unless there is a massive upsurge in violence in either country. According to him, the incoming administration in January 2009 faces some difficult decisions from the start and might see its first term of office dominated by the two wars even more than the presidency of George W Bush.
