This paper examines India's economic development and looks at its integration into regional economic structures such as the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC). It introduces the state and development of South Asia with respect to population, gross domestic product and poverty and discusses India's reform of the rural sector, taxation, public expenditure and legal system. Subsequently, the paper looks at regional disparities in India's development and explores the functioning and effectiveness of SAARC.
