This commentary focuses on how Brexit has indeed pushed the EU into unchartered legal and political waters. The text’s authors specifically look at how the EU-27 will have to 1) develop an exit doctrine that will codify the UK’s departure as soon as it officially announces its intention to leave; 2) reshape the Union’s relationship with the breakaway country, particularly in the case of existing treaties; and 3) devise a downstream “renewal of integration” with the UK, which could start with individual member states.
