This article provides a history of discussions about an energy security role for the NATO. It outlines the potential contributions NATO could make and examines some of the complexities and difficulties in establishing a clear agenda. The author explains that the proposed energy security role for NATO is limited and that the signals being emitted by NATO members in this respect are unclear.
