This paper examines the local capacity for standards conformity assessment in developing countries as an important component in accessing export markets. Through the case study of spices in Tanzania, the paper explains that standards compliance is possible only where relevant local institutions are accredited and adequately capitalized in terms of laboratory facilities, testing equipment and certification services. The paper concludes by recommending ways to improve local conformity assessment in Tanzania in relation to food safety and organic standards.
