This brief looks at energy insecurity in relation to the global dependence on Middle East oil. The authors argue that increasing competition for oil and other energy resources might aggravate existing conflicts or create new conflicts between major energy consumers, especially in northeast Asia. They propose that the G20 take a leading role in ensuring the efficient functioning of energy markets, international cooperation and the promotion of consensual rules.
