This brief examines how the Australian government implements its stated opposition to the death penalty. The author finds that while Australia is an effective advocate for Australian nationals on death row, the country does less than it could in relation to universal abolition. He argues that Australia should accelerate its efforts on comprehensive abolition by introducing more consistency to the rhetoric on the death penalty and by initiating a regional coalition against it.
