This workshop report looks at the security, political and human rights status of Darfur and the present state of the United Nations–African Union Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID), which requires a revised mandate. More specifically, 1) the new mandate should adopt tailored approaches to protect civilians in dissimilar areas; 2) UNAMID should cooperate with the AU High-Level Implementation Panel to strengthen mediation efforts in Darfur; and 3) where violence has receded, the Mission should focus more on addressing the drivers that caused it in the first place.
