This paper discusses US-Syrian relations and argues that the US policy of isolationism benefits neither party. The authors suggest that rapprochement would better serve both states and that better relations with Syria could act as the means to the Bush administration's other ends in the region. They also state that the US' isolationism toward Syria, rather than serving as an effective punitive measure, exacerbates the situation. The paper provides a number of pragmatic proposals to address the mutually inconvenient situation.
