This paper contributes to the understanding of environmental product (EP) innovations by introducing and testing a novel research framework. The framework is applied to study EP-innovations by German manufacturers of electrical and electronic appliances. The results show that both customer benefit and regulation play a key role for EP-innovation. Regulations foster implementation of EP-innovations while customer benefits are more stimulating to overcome the initial obstacle of implementing an EP-innovation than stringent regulation.
