This paper discusses how China's rise to political and economic prominence has become a major pre-occupation for academics and policymakers, particularly in the US. It offers an introduction to China's military posture and outlines the country's strategic priorities, military capabilities as well as the aims of its military modernization program. The authors further examine the dichotomy between what China characterizes as its "peaceful development" and its military ambitions and address the question of whether China's military build up can be considered benign.
