This paper traces the US's diplomatic, economic and cultural involvement in Iran during the first-half of the 20th century. It specifically argues that it was often the Iranians themselves who pursued and encouraged US involvement in their country, primarily to counterbalance British and Russian influence and to advance the interests of Iranian nationalism.
