This paper discusses US-Egyptian relations between 1919 and 1939. It focuses on three prominent issues: the US recognition of the British protectorate in Egypt, American missionary activities and American archaeological interests in Egypt. It argues that although US officials aimed to win Egyptian goodwill, there were several points of friction between the two that played a role in shaping Egyptian perceptions of the US.
