This paper discusses the US policy toward Jewish aspirations in Palestine between the years 1917-1948. The author writes that, although the standard historical interpretation of the State Department policy was one of anti-Zionism, a closer look at its documents reveals a more complex picture. He suggests that through this period, the State Department argued for a position of neutrality regarding Zionism, and that US national interests in the Middle East rested on the traditional pillars of economic and philanthropic pursuits.
