This paper argues that Americans have considered Islam a significant political force since the end of the World War II. It is based on sources from popular culture, the academic community and the US government. The paper further contends that these interpretations of Islam comprise but one piece of a dominant mindset that guided how Americans viewed and understood the region between 1945 and 1967.
