This paper discusses China's economic growth and potential convergence with western Europe's living standards in relation to climate change. The authors use several models to project a realistic business-as-usual trajectory of CO2 emissions, and find it to be even above the CO2 emissions from the high-growth scenario estimated by the Energy Information Agency in 2007. The results of the models are set in relation to different CO2 reduction mechanisms and policies. In addition, the authors also advocate a shift away from fossil-based energies and give recommendations about future international climate agreements.
