This articles outlines how the landscape of the international trading environment is changing. The author examines world trade in transition and the mounting strains on the multilateral trading system. In addition, the ever-expanding web of preferential trade arrangements and the shifting patterns of regional trade dynamics are analyzed. The manufacturing might of the services-based export model of China and India contributes to a fundamental reshaping of the worldwide pattern of trade.
