This study examines the origins and evolution of both China and the US’ foreign aid programs, and how Beijing has posed a challenge to the Western aid system in recent times. The author finds that the US and China have followed nearly parallel paths as providers of foreign aid over the last seven decades, with both counties ostensibly aiming at furthering economic development while also furthering their own national interests. For instance, he suggests that the US has largely provided such aid in an attempt to stabilize the world order and to promote political and economic liberalization. China, on the other hand, has used its foreign aid primarily to strengthen its position as a leader of the Global South.
