This paper takes stock of the post-Crimea security and defense challenges NATO faces in the Black Sea Region. The text’s author concludes that the Alliance 1) lacks the resources it needs to defend its eastern flank, regardless of the commitments it has made, and 2) needs to make specific operational and policy adjustments if it hopes to protect its interests around the Black Sea.
