This analysis focuses on the implications of reports that the US National Institute of Health (NIH) funded bat coronavirus research in China’s Wuhan Institute of Virology. The issues addressed include 1) the reason given for why the NIH funded this research in China; 2) efforts by actors in the US to hold China to account in light of allegations that the Wuhan lab could be connected to the current coronavirus pandemic; 3) the implications for such efforts were it to be the case that the related research was funded by the US government; 4) the broader concern for the need for greater oversight of biosecurity laboratories, and more.
