This brief takes stock of the multi-stakeholder peace-building efforts that are underway in Africa’s Great Lakes region. The text’s author initially provides a comprehensive history of conflict in the area, to include the complex intrastate dynamics that have contributed to regional turmoil. Then, by drawing on research conducted by the Great Lakes Project (GLP), the author presents a set of policy recommendations that would close existing policy gaps, build stronger political institutions, and implement affirmative action strategies that would benefit marginalized and minority groups.
