The North Korea-United States Hanoi summit in February failed to produce an agreement on the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. Duyeon Kim writes that no deal was better than a bad deal, but the additional failure to establish a next meeting was not encouraging. So what’s the way forward? In this publication, Kim responds by examining potential pathways towards denuclearization and peace on the peninsula, and by outlining how Washington needs to configure the right tradeoffs to move North Korea towards taking denuclearization steps without giving away too much too soon.
