This paper looks back at the Battle of Jutland in order to see if it holds any enduring lessons for us today. One conclusion the text’s author draws is that the outcome of the pre-WWI arms race provided a good indicator of which country would prevail in the struggle for naval mastery. He further concludes that any future Battle of Jutland, which will be fought in the aerospace domain, cyber realm, and maritime commons, will play out against a high-stakes strategic background of rising and declining great powers and that if the US hopes to prevail in that contest, it must prepare not only for the day of battle but also for the day after.
