This brief discusses whether the signing of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) between Iran and the P5+1 nations will lead to greater human rights in the Islamic Republic. The rights in question, which may benefit from international pressure being put on Tehran, include capital punishment; freedom of expression; political participation and freedom of assembly; and ethnic, religious and women's rights.
