Are you interested in the Russian military’s strategy and doctrine on information and cyber warfare? If so, this text is for you. It scrutinizes official Russian documents on the topics and then looks at several examples where concepts were applied at the national, regional and international levels. The paper’s author ultimately concludes that 1) the activities of the Russian Armed Forces in the information space are indeed subordinate to Russia’s wider, long-term information security strategy, and 2) the views of Russian strategists on using force as a deterrent have increasingly radicalized. In the last case, for example, the purpose of nuclear deterrence, which was initially designed to prevent a nuclear attack, has been expanded to include the prevention of a conventional attack and, most recently, an information assault (as defined by Russian terminology).
