Algeria is an important strategic partner for Europe, particularly because of its available energy resources, counterterrorism capabilities, and the role it plays as a security advocate in its neighborhood. It is also a country where a one-dimensional economy, persistently low oil prices, limited investments in the hydrocarbon sector, and a deliberately circumscribed transition to democracy are sorely testing its stability. And yet, the Bouteflika regime continues to display remarkable resilience in the face of the challenges it faces. There are multiple reasons for the regime’s durability, which this analysis’ author explores in detail and expects to continue in the near- to mid-term.
