This paper describes the role of civil society in assuring post-conflict reconstruction, peace, and regional security. The author states that since the end of the Cold War and the shift from inter-state to intra-state conflicts, the international community has changed its methods of achieving conflict resolution and conflict prevention. The paper explains how the international community has placed an emphasis on strengthening the institutions of civil society, and on including non-governmental organizations in the process of peacebuilding. The author argues that lasting peace can only be achieved if it is based on a functioning civil society.
