This publication contends that Southeast Asia has become a contested space as competition between the US and China intensifies. The text’s authors also argue that the time is now for the US to address its approach towards the region as it lies at the front line of Beijing’s expanding influence. In response, they first look at the approaches of major powers – the United States, Japan, and China – toward the region. They then review how the US can renew its policy toward Southeast Asia along four primary axes: economics, security, diplomacy, and its alliance with Japan.
