This publication examines the development of the European Union from its historical origins in the years after the Second World War to the creation of the Economic and Monetary Union at the end of the 21st century. The authors discuss the economic and political aspects of integration and the difficulties endured by new members acceding to the EU. They also provide an overview of the main EU institutions.
