This essay discusses the prospect of Korean unification. The author examines the nature and credibility of the North Korean threat, the military capabilities of North and South Korea, and the changing nature of the alliance between the US and the Republic of Korea. The essay identifies the obstacles to unification and examines public opinion on the issue. It concludes that while Korea may indeed sit at the threshold of long-awaited change, the nature of change has often been misunderstood or overstated in the public debate.
