This paper briefly details the history of economic sanctions. The authors describe that economic sanctions historically always foreshadowed or accompanied warfare, and that the use of economic sanctions as an alternative to force only developed after the First World War. The paper explains that since the end of the Second World War economic sanctions have chiefly been used for foreign policy purposes. The authors state that economic sanctions have been employed to promote democracy and human rights, to end civil war, to stop drug trafficking, to fight terrorism, to combat weapons proliferation, and to promote nuclear disarmament.
