This paper analyzes the potential economic ramifications of the EU granting Market Economy Status (MES) to China. According to the text’s author, acquiring this status would endanger sectors of the EU labor market where anti-dumping measures are currently in place. At the same time, however, blocking Beijing’s accession would worsen overall political and economic relations with Brussels. Given these stark choices, the author ultimately encourages EU members to adjust existing anti-dumping measures and help reinforce needed trade defense instruments.
