This analysis generally argues that 1) Australia needs Southeast Asia more than vice versa; 2) Singapore’s strategic stock is rising as Australia’s most advanced and reliable security partner in the region; and 3) the two countries have an enduring tit-for-tat strategic relationship in which Canberra gets to enhance its economic access to Southeast Asian markets and Singapore gets to use its partner's military training areas. The text’s author further argues that the most important attributes of this partnership are indeed non-material – i.e., a shared mindset and a willingness to commit to each other over the long-term.
