This study ponders how the reintroduction of temporary internal border controls is impacting the ability of Schengen members to comply with the free movement area’s governing framework. The text’s authors conclude that despite the alarmism surrounding the issue, Schengen is alive and well and that the new border controls have, at least formally, complied with its legal framework. Nonetheless, the authors further believe that better monitoring and democratic accountability are necessary to deal effectively with this issue.
