The articles in this CTC Sentinel issue examine 1) trends in the crime-terror nexus in Europe; 2) the so-called Islamic State’s (IS) plot to target an international airliner in Sydney, Australia, and what it reveals about the group’s approach to external operations; 3) the evolution of IS’ chemical weapons efforts; 4) the Iraqi government’s operation to drive IS from the group’s last urban stronghold in Iraq and how the removal of IS could expose ethnic and sectarian tensions; and 5) the threat posed by IS’ training of potential jihadis via the Internet. The issue additionally features an interview with Lisa Monaco, former US Homeland Security and Counterterrorism advisor to President Barack Obama.
