This report summarizes the results of a conference held on 18 July 2016 in Amman, Jordan. The topics discussed include 1) the question of borders, ethnicities and confessions in the MENA region from World War I to the present; 2) whether the decisions taken during and after the Great War can ultimately be linked to the present unraveling of state authority in the region; 3) the phenomenon of power vacuums and state fragility; 4) the emergence of non-state rivalry and conflict; and 5) the relationship between socio-economic, political and military developments in the Middle East, including the role of foreign powers and sub-national, ethnic and religious minorities.
