This report traces the efforts of the African Union (AU) and the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) to support efforts to resolve the crisis in Burundi, which has primarily been caused by Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza's decision to run for a third term in office. The authors also examine the institutional and political constraints that the AU and ICGLR face when they try to address instability in their member states and also address the coordination issues which exist between the AU, the ICGLR and the East African Community (EAC).
