This backgrounder reviews the often fraught relationship between China and Taiwan. It specifically discusses 1) the One China principle, which continues to assert that Taiwan is an inalienable part of the PRC; 2) Taiwan's historical relationship to China, which has fueled a military buildup between the two nations; 3) the economic rapprochement which has existed since the late 1970s; and 4) the increasing number of people in Taiwan who regard themselves as exclusively Taiwanese.
