This commentary reviews Ukraine’s macroeconomic performance in 2016 and speculates on how the country will fare this year. As part of his analysis, the text’s author examines 1) Ukraine’s present economic wellbeing, including its trade turnover; 2) the status of its agricultural and metallurgical sectors; and 3) Kiev’s ongoing relationship with the IMF. The author ultimately concludes that the nation’s economic performance in 2017 will most likely depend on factors outside of Kiev’s control, such as climate conditions and the unresolved conflict in the Donbas region.
