How does mediation affect the long-term performance of power-sharing settlements? In this publication, Alexandre Raffoul addresses this question by focusing on six case studies from Burundi (2000), Nepal (2006), Northern Ireland (1998), Bosnia and Herzegovina (1995), Lebanon (1989) and Rwanda (1993). Raffoul finds 1) that certain features of the mediation process create conditions that are more or less favorable to addressing problems that arise during the implementation of power-sharing agreements; and 2) the continuation of mediation can help enhance the chances of dealing with issues that emerge in the post-agreement phase.
