This publication examines the United States’ recent protectionist policies and their implications for the country. It contends that the Trump administration’s strategy is to maximize benefits for the US at the expense of its partners by concluding new deals under the pressure of protectionist measures. As the renegotiations of the free-trade agreement with Canada, Mexico, and with South Korea show, this strategy has already been put into practice. However, the text’s authors argue that in the long term, trade conflicts may have a negative impact on American enterprises and increase the trade deficit, thus contributing to the decline of support for the Republicans and the president.
