This publication examines EU macro-regional strategies (MRS), which are EU initiatives to create multi-country coordination structures in order to strengthen joint collaboration on challenges member states have in common. More specifically, after outlining the concept of macro-regional strategies, the text's authors look at 1) the EU's MRS for the Baltic Sea Region (EUSBSR), the Danube Region (EUSDR), the Adriatic and Ionian Region (EUAIR) and the EU's Alpine Region (EUSALP); 2) progress in the development of EU MRS; 3) MRS and the implementation of the EU´s Energy Union, and more.
